Many constituents have written to me concerned about the future of Fairlop Outdoor Activity Centre. I have heard from local residents about the importance of the centre to the community and of the fond memories they have of their times there. I was particularly pleased that many young people who are involved in the Sea Scouts took the time to write to me to share how much they have enjoyed sailing and canoeing at the Centre. I know many people will be looking forward to returning to the water when the restrictions allow.
Knowing how important the Centre is to the community, I wrote directly to the Chief Executive of Redbridge Council asking for clarity on the future of the Centre. In my letter to the Chief Executive I asked him to re-think any planned budget cuts, to lay out a clear timetable for any proposed upgrades of the facilities and for confirmation that existing staff will be kept on. Most importantly, I made it very clear that the Council should not close the centre.
I was pleased that Redbridge Council have now committed to keeping the Centre open and will be upgrading some of the facilities at the Centre. I am seeking assurances from the Chief Executive that existing staff will be retained through this upgrade and asking him to confirm whether any budget cuts to the day to day costs of running the Centre have been proposed.
