Yesterday, I spoke in the Westminster Hall debate on e-petition 730194 relating to digital ID.
I strongly oppose the Government’s planned digital identification scheme. It is, in my view, a distraction from recent scandals and the Government’s ongoing failure to address illegal immigration.
A mandatory digital ID card will not stop Channel crossings; only an effective deterrent will. Linking migration policy to digital ID also risks fuelling conspiracy theories and increasing public distrust. France and Italy have introduced similar systems and still face major migration challenges.
