Today, on Tibet Lobby Day, I was pleased to meet Tibetan constituents in Parliament as they joined the annual mass lobby.
Tibet Lobby Day brings together members of the Tibetan community and supporters from across the UK to meet parliamentarians and raise awareness of the concerning human rights abuses being carried out in Tibet.
For many years, I have spoken out against the persecution of ethnic and religious minorities by the Chinese Government and this year's lobby focused on China's "Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress". This law, in reality, is designed to further eradicate Tibetan identity, culture, language and religious freedom.
I strongly condemn any measures to suppress the rights and freedoms of the Tibetan people. The UK must be clear in their condemnation of policies that undermine cultural and ethnic identity and continue to press the Chinese Government to uphold fundamental human rights.
As Members of Parliament, we have a responsibility to speak out. Today was an important opportunity to stand not only with my Tibetan constituents but with the Tibetan people and reaffirm our commitment to freedom, human rights and the preservation of Tibet's unique cultural heritage.
