I met with a group of key workers such as healthcare professionals, transport operatives, social workers and unpaid carers in the constituency. After listening to their experiences of being a keyworker through the pandemic, I wrote on their behalf to the Chancellor asking that the Government recognise and reward the contribution of key workers over the last year. I also highlighted two further important issues. I raised the issue that many nurses are leaving NHS contracts to work for agencies, due to the higher pay that is offered. I explained to the Chancellor that this ends up costing the taxpayer more, as the NHS then has to contract the agency workers, at a higher cost, and then in addition pay the agency fee.
I also raised the contribution made by unpaid carers in the UK, who provide excellent at-home care to friends and relatives and save the economy approximately £132 billion per year. I asked that as part of the review of adult social care, the Government acknowledge and incentivise carers and review how the Carer’s Allowance can best support carers, particularly on the lowest incomes.
