Today I visited the Chingford Road Morrisons store to mark this investment and the continued growth of Morrisons in Chingford through the introduction of its central customer fulfilment centre to the store.
Community investment is vital if young people in Chingford and Woodford Green can get the chance to take their first step onto the employment ladder. Yet the proportion of 16- and 17-year-olds in work has fallen from 35% in 2006 to just 19% today, highlighting the importance of creating new opportunities.
That is why I am delighted that Morrisons has shown confidence in Chingford by creating 45 new jobs through the introduction of its Morrisons Now customer fulfilment centre at the Chingford Road store, E4 8SN.
At a time when youth unemployment is a serious concern, this investment provides valuable opportunities for young local residents leaving education and looking for work. Every full-time and part-time role, including Home Delivery Drivers, Team Leaders and Customer Assistants, has been filled by local residents, many of whom are young people.
The store will now fulfil online orders for customers across Chingford, offering a wider range of fresh products such as freshly baked bread, fresh cream sponge cakes and in-store prepared pizzas. In addition to groceries and household essentials, customers can also order party food through the Food to Order service.
Investment and job creation in Chingford and Woodford Green is vital, and I will continue to support growth and opportunity across our community.
