This morning, I hosted the first Transition from Education to Employment: Beyond the Classroom event in the Houses of Parliament, bringing together Year 11, 12 and 13 students from schools across Chingford and Woodford Green.
The event was to give students a clear understanding of the opportunities available to them after school, including further education, apprenticeships, skills and training, employment pathways, and the support available to help them make a successful transition.
Representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) delivered a presentation and Q&A session on the support and resources available to young people, as well as practical advice on CV writing and interview skills. Students also heard from Waltham Forest College, which showcased the wide range of pathways available, including T Levels, BTECs and apprenticeships. Chingford and Woodford Green school pupils also had the opportunity to hear first-hand from former students about their experiences and career journeys.
At a time when youth unemployment is rising, and many young people are finding it increasingly difficult to secure their first opportunity, it is more important than ever that students understand the options available to them. I launched this event to ensure that young people across our constituency are aware of the opportunities open to them locally and nationally, helping them make informed decisions about their future.
I would like to thank the Department for Work and Pensions and Waltham Forest College for their support in making the event a success.
Following the positive response, I am pleased to confirm that we will be hosting another Transition from Education: Beyond the Classroom event in the summer term of 2027, and I encourage schools from across Chingford and Woodford Green to get involved.
