Time for Action
On 13 July 2023, Labour Redbridge Council made the decision to close parts of Broadmead Road, specifically the bridge between Charteris Road and St Barnabas Road after a structural survey identified serious issues with the bridge over the Central Line.
Two Years Closed. Two Years of Disruption.
For too long now, the disruption to residents and local business continue and the progress being made on the rebuild remains still unclear.
However, a Freedom of Information request submitted by local journalist Josh Mellor revealed that Transport for London (TfL) first raised significant concerns about the bridge as early as 2014. In their warning, TfL stated that failure to act could result in:
“injury or service loss with the ensuing legal actions.”
Despite this, the Labour Council took no meaningful action and failed to inform the public. This lack of transparency and urgency is unacceptable.
As your Member of Parliament, I have consistently raised this issue with Redbridge Council, TfL, and both the previous and current Governments. I will continue to press for full accountability and urgent progress on the rebuild.
The Government has the money, now it’s time to allocate it.
In June 2025, the Government announced a new £1 billion Structures Fund to rebuild and repair vital transport infrastructure across the country.
I have now written to the Transport Secretary, Rt Hon Heidi Alexander MP, to formally nominate Broadmead Road Bridge for early inclusion in this fund.
